Why Your Farm Concrete Cracked in Alberta (And How to Prevent It Next Time)

Short answer: almost all farm concrete cracks eventually. The question isn’t whether a crack shows up, it’s where, how wide, and whether it means anything structural. Hairline cracks that stay tight are normal and don’t need fixing. Cracks you can lay a pencil in, cracks with vertical displacement, or cracks that keep opening up year after year are a different story.

This is the article to read if you’re looking at your shop floor or bin pad and wondering whether you’ve got a problem. It’s also the article to read before you pour your next slab, because most of the failures we get called out on could have been prevented for pennies on the dollar during the original build.

Why concrete cracks in the first place — the truck tire analogy

Concrete has a split personality. It’s incredibly strong when you push down on it (compression) and incredibly weak when you pull it apart (tension). Think of a truck tire — you can stack a huge weight on top and the tire holds. But grab both sides and pull outward and it stretches easily. Concrete is the opposite of most materials in this way: strong under load, helpless under stretching.

Now think about your farm slab under a combine tire. The concrete under the tire is being pushed down. It handles that fine. But the underside of the slab, between the wheel and the next support point, is being stretched — pulled apart — as the slab bends. That’s where cracks start.

Rebar solves this. Steel is the opposite of concrete: incredible in tension, mediocre in compression. You put rebar in the tension zone of a slab — the lower third, running both directions — and the rebar takes the pulling-apart load while the concrete keeps handling the pushing-down load. A slab with proper rebar still cracks eventually, but the cracks stay hairline. The rebar is literally holding the two halves of the crack together like stitches on a wound.

The six real reasons farm concrete cracks early

1. Bad base — the #1 killer

If the gravel underneath the slab wasn’t properly compacted, or was too thin, or wasn’t draining water away, the slab loses uniform support. Some spots hold. Some spots sink. The slab bends over the soft spots and cracks over them. This is by far the most common cause of farm concrete failure in Central Alberta.

Symptom: random cracks running across the slab in patterns that don’t match the joint layout, often with one side of the crack settling lower than the other. You’ll see the same cracks show up on the surface year after year, opening a little wider each freeze-thaw cycle.

2. No rebar, wrong rebar, or rebar in the wrong place

A shop slab without rebar is a driveway waiting to crumble. A shop slab with wire mesh instead of rebar is barely better. A shop slab with rebar laying on the ground under the pour is almost the same as no rebar at all — the steel isn’t where the tension is, so it does nothing.

Symptom: cracks open wide (1/8 inch or more), the two sides of the crack shift up or down under load, and the crack keeps growing.

3. Wrong concrete mix for what it’s doing

Concrete comes in different strengths — measured in PSI, the pressure the cured concrete can handle. 2500 PSI is the residential code minimum. 3000 PSI is standard for farm shops. 3500–4000 PSI is what heavy loads and heated-shop environments need.

Bigger issue: in Alberta, every outdoor slab needs to be air-entrained. That means tiny air bubbles are deliberately mixed into the concrete to give freeze-thaw water somewhere to expand into. Without air entrainment, water in the concrete pores freezes and pops chunks off the top surface every winter — “scaling” is what it’s called.

Symptom of low-PSI mix: crushing and crumbling under heavy loads. Symptom of no air entrainment: the top surface flakes off in thin layers, leaving pitted patches, especially near door entries where water and salt collect.

4. Freeze-thaw damage on the surface

Central Alberta gets a lot of freeze-thaw cycling — especially in a chinook belt spring where daytime temps swing above freezing and drop back below every 24 hours. Every cycle, water in the concrete pores expands as it freezes and pushes outward. If the concrete doesn’t have air entrainment, that expansion breaks the paste apart from the aggregate.

Deicing salts make it worse. Salt tracked in from a truck or dumped on an outdoor pad to melt ice draws moisture deeper into the concrete and increases the freeze-thaw damage. If you salt your driveway or apron, you need a good-quality air-entrained mix with a sealer, or plan to see scaling within a few years.

Symptom: surface scaling and pitting, especially along wheel paths and around drainage points.

5. No control joints — or badly spaced ones

Concrete shrinks as it cures. It’s going to crack somewhere — you can’t stop that. What you can do is tell it where to crack. Control joints are the grooves cut or tooled into the surface of the slab within 24 hours of the pour. They’re a weakened line that concentrates the shrinkage stress, so the crack goes down the joint instead of a random wandering line across the slab.

For farm concrete, joint spacing should be roughly 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, in feet. A 6-inch slab wants joints roughly every 12–15 feet. Missed joints, joints spaced too far apart, or joints cut too shallow (they need to be at least a quarter of the slab depth) all lead to random cracking.

Symptom: cracks running through the middle of large slab sections between properly-placed joints. Or joint lines wandering across the slab instead of running straight from edge to edge.

6. Poor curing — concrete finished and then abandoned

Concrete gets stronger over 28 days, and it needs moisture through most of that time to do it. If a fresh slab is left exposed to hot sun, wind, or dry cold, the surface loses moisture too fast, the top layer under-cures, and you end up with a soft, dusty surface that scales easily and cracks under load.

Proper curing means either wet-curing (soaker hoses, burlap blankets kept damp, plastic sheeting) or a curing compound sprayed on right after finish. Then leaving the slab alone — no traffic, no early loads — for at least 7 days.

Symptom: a slab that dusts when you sweep it, a surface that scales in the first winter, and cracks that show up in the first season under normal loads.

How to tell if a crack is cosmetic or a problem

Not every crack means anything. Here’s how I sort them when I get called out to look at farm concrete.

Cosmetic — you can leave it alone

  • Hairline cracks (under 1/16 inch wide) running in short random lines across the surface — usually “plastic shrinkage” cracks that formed as the fresh concrete lost water too fast.
  • Crazing — a fine spiderweb pattern of very shallow cracks on the surface. Purely cosmetic on the top few millimetres.
  • Straight cracks running down control joint lines. That’s the joint doing its job.
  • Tight cracks (under 1/16 inch) not showing any movement across the two sides of the crack, in slabs with proper rebar. The rebar is holding it. Just seal the crack to keep water out and move on.

Worth watching — monitor and maybe seal

  • Cracks 1/16 to 1/8 inch wide with no displacement between sides.
  • Cracks that only opened after a specific event (a big load, a hard freeze, etc.) but aren’t continuing to grow.
  • Surface scaling in specific areas that’s only skin-deep — usually a mix or curing problem, not structural.

Call a contractor — this is structural

  • Cracks wider than 1/8 inch, especially if they’re opening up further year to year.
  • Any vertical displacement — one side of the crack has settled lower than the other. That means the base underneath is moving.
  • Cracks radiating outward from anchor bolts on a bin pad. That means the pad is failing around the anchor pattern.
  • Cracks around the perimeter of a slab with corner drop. Frost heave or settlement pulling the edge down.
  • Deep scaling with exposed aggregate. The concrete surface is failing all the way down past the paste layer — the slab has a real durability problem.
  • Any slab that’s cracked and moving under a loaded bin, feedlot equipment, or a shop drive lane. Deal with it before the failure gets worse.

The prevention checklist — what to demand on your next farm pour

Copy this list. Print it if you have to. If your contractor pushes back on any of these, that’s a red flag.

  • Proper base: 6–12 inches of compacted 3/4-inch minus gravel, more on clay sites, compacted in lifts with a plate or roller.
  • Real rebar: #4 minimum at 12-inch centres both ways for standard farm slabs, #5 for heavy slabs. Tied at intersections. Sitting on chairs at proper depth. Not laying on the gravel.
  • Right concrete mix: 3000 PSI minimum for farm shops, 3500–4000 for heavy loads or bin pads, always air-entrained.
  • Control joints cut on time: within 12–24 hours of the pour, spaced roughly every 12–15 feet for a 6-inch slab, at least a quarter of the slab thickness deep.
  • Curing plan: wet-cure with blankets or a proper curing compound sprayed on after finish. Kept damp or sealed for at least 7 days.
  • No early loads: foot traffic okay after a week, real farm loads only after 28 days.

  • Drainage away from the slab: grade the site so water runs off the edge, not under it.
  • Sealer if you salt: if you deice the slab, a penetrating sealer every 2–3 years extends its life a lot.

Alberta-specific stuff that catches people out

A few things about Central Alberta that make our concrete tougher than concrete anywhere warmer:

  • Chinook cycling. A February chinook can put us through five freeze-thaw cycles in a single week. Every cycle is another chance for water in the pores to expand and break the matrix. Air entrainment matters more here than almost anywhere else.
  • Frost depth is 4 feet. Any footing that supports a shop wall or building has to bear below 4 feet on undisturbed soil. Above that line, frost heave will lift and drop it every year.
  • Clay soils through Red Deer County. Clay shrinks when it dries, swells when it’s wet. That movement transfers straight through the base into the slab if the base isn’t built to isolate the slab from it. On the worst clay we’ll use geotextile fabric and a deeper engineered granular pad.
  • Short pour season. Reliable pour weather is roughly May through early October. Trying to pour in April with overnight lows still hitting -5 is a recipe for a slab that never reaches design strength.

Fixing cracked concrete — what’s worth doing

Not every cracked slab needs to be torn out. Options depending on severity:

  • Crack injection. Epoxy or polyurethane injected into cracks to seal them and bond the two sides. Works well on tight cracks with no movement.
  • Overlay. A thin high-strength concrete topping poured over a structurally sound but cosmetically damaged slab. Fixes surface scaling without demo.
  • Cut-and-patch. Saw-cut around a bad section, remove it, prep the base, and repour that section. Works for localized failures.
  • Full removal and replacement. Sometimes the base is the problem and the only real fix is to tear the slab out, redo the prep, and repour. Expensive but sometimes cheaper than living with the failure.

Are all concrete cracks a problem?

No. Hairline cracks under 1/16 inch, crazing (fine spiderweb patterns), and cracks that follow control joint lines are all cosmetic and normal. The cracks to worry about are wider than 1/8 inch, cracks with vertical displacement between the two sides, cracks that keep growing year over year, and cracks radiating outward from bin anchor bolts or slab corners.

Can I fix a cracked farm slab without tearing it out?

Often yes. Tight cracks can be sealed with epoxy or polyurethane injection. Surface scaling can be repaired with a high-strength concrete overlay. Localized failures can be saw-cut and patched. Full tear-out and repour is only needed when the base underneath is the problem or the whole slab is undersized for the loads. Why does my shop floor keep scaling every spring?

That's a mix or curing problem, not a load problem. Either the concrete wasn't air-entrained (which is not optional in Alberta), the top surface wasn't properly cured after the pour, or you're using deicing salts that are pulling moisture into the surface and accelerating freeze-thaw damage. A penetrating concrete sealer and switching from salt to sand can extend its life. Long term, a bonded overlay will restore the surface.

How wide is too wide for a farm concrete crack?

Rough rule: under 1/16 inch (a business card's thickness) is cosmetic. 1/16 to 1/8 inch is worth watching and probably worth sealing. Over 1/8 inch, or any crack where one side is displaced up or down relative to the other, is structural and worth having a contractor look at. Cracks that keep growing wider between annual inspections are the ones to act on soonest.

Does rebar actually stop concrete from cracking?

No — rebar doesn't stop cracks, it keeps them tight after they form. Concrete is strong when you push down on it but weak when you pull it apart. What's the single biggest cause of farm concrete failure in Alberta?

Bad base preparation. Nine times out of ten, when we get called out to look at a failed farm slab, it's because the gravel underneath wasn't deep enough, wasn't compacted properly, or wasn't draining water.
