Flatwork done right the first time.

Flatwork is the industry term for any horizontal concrete slab — driveways, patios, sidewalks, walkways, garage floors, basement floors, garage aprons, RV pads. Basically, anything you walk or drive on. It's distinct from foundations, footings, or vertical concrete (walls). Most residential concrete work in Blackfalds and Penhold falls under flatwork.

The four big drivers are thickness (a 4-inch driveway vs. a 6-inch shop floor), reinforcement (mesh vs. rebar), base prep (existing gravel vs. strip and compact new road crush), and finish (broom vs. stamped vs. exposed aggregate). Access, saw-cutting old slab, and site drainage add or subtract from there. We quote per-job, not per-square-foot averages, because the numbers vary so much.

Concrete gains most of its strength in the first 7 days and reaches full design strength at 28 days — same everywhere. What Alberta adds is the temperature challenge. In warm weather we can walk on it after 24-48 hours and drive on it after a week. In cool weather we blanket the slab and delay traffic. In freezing weather we don't pour without heated blankets and hot water mix — cold cure destroys concrete strength.

In the Town of Blackfalds, a new garage or building over 10 sq metres typically requires a Development Permit and a Building Permit. A standalone concrete slab (like an RV pad) without a structure on it often falls under Development Permit review depending on location, coverage, and setback. In Penhold, the process is similar through Town of Penhold Planning. We check with the town's office before quoting.

September and early October are usually fine. Late October through early November is workable with cold-weather protocol — hot water mix, insulated blankets, extended cure time. Once overnight lows drop below freezing consistently, we stop pouring exterior flatwork because the cure suffers and the concrete's long-term strength takes a hit. Better to wait for spring than to pour a compromised slab.

Yes. Saw-cutting, breaking, hauling, and disposal are included in most replacement jobs. Older Penhold and Blackfalds homes often have 30-40+ year old driveways or walks that have heaved past repair — full replacement with proper base and reinforcement is usually the right call rather than repeated patching.
